Buying Guide for the Best Skateboards For Big Guys

Choosing a skateboard as a bigger or heavier rider means paying special attention to the board's strength, stability, and comfort. The right skateboard will support your weight, provide a smooth ride, and help you feel confident whether you're cruising, commuting, or learning tricks. It's important to look beyond just the design and focus on the technical aspects that affect performance and durability. Understanding the key specifications will help you find a skateboard that matches your body type and riding style, ensuring both safety and enjoyment.
Deck WidthDeck width refers to how wide the skateboard is from side to side. This is important because a wider deck offers more stability and support, which is especially helpful for bigger riders. Decks typically range from about 7.5 inches to over 9 inches wide. Narrow decks (7.5–8 inches) are lighter and easier to flip, but may feel unstable for heavier riders. Medium decks (8–8.5 inches) offer a balance of control and comfort, while wide decks (8.5 inches and above) provide the most stability and are best for big guys. If you have larger feet or want extra balance, go for a wider deck.
Deck Material and ConstructionThe material and construction of the deck determine how much weight it can handle and how long it will last. Most skateboards are made from layers of maple wood, but some use bamboo, fiberglass, or composite materials for added strength. For heavier riders, look for decks with more plies (layers), reinforced construction, or materials known for durability. A stronger deck resists cracking and flexing, making it safer and more reliable. If you’re a big guy, prioritize boards advertised as reinforced or heavy-duty.
Weight CapacityWeight capacity is the maximum weight a skateboard can safely support. This is crucial for bigger riders to prevent breakage and ensure a smooth ride. Not all skateboards list a specific weight limit, but heavy-duty boards often support 220 pounds or more. If you’re close to or above average weight, look for boards that mention higher weight capacities or are recommended for adults. Always choose a board that comfortably exceeds your weight for safety and performance.
Truck Size and StrengthTrucks are the metal parts that attach the wheels to the deck and allow you to turn. For bigger riders, strong and wide trucks are essential for stability and durability. Trucks come in different widths to match the deck and are made from various metals. Standard trucks may bend or break under extra weight, so look for trucks made from high-quality materials like reinforced aluminum or steel. Wider trucks (matching your deck width) provide better balance and control, which is especially important for heavier skaters.
Wheel Size and HardnessWheels affect how your skateboard rolls and handles different surfaces. Larger wheels (54mm and above) roll more smoothly and handle cracks and bumps better, which is helpful for heavier riders. Wheel hardness is measured in durometer; softer wheels (78A–87A) offer more grip and shock absorption, while harder wheels (88A–101A) are faster but less forgiving. If you’re a big guy, slightly larger and softer wheels can make your ride smoother and more comfortable, especially if you plan to cruise or commute.
Bearings QualityBearings are the small parts inside the wheels that let them spin. Good-quality bearings help your skateboard roll smoothly and last longer, even under extra weight. Bearings are rated by the ABEC scale, but the material and build quality matter more than the number. For heavier riders, look for bearings made from strong materials like steel or ceramic, and consider sealed bearings to keep out dirt. Smooth, durable bearings make pushing easier and reduce wear over time.
