Buying Guide for the Best Pool Table Felt

Choosing the right pool table felt is important for both the look and playability of your table. The felt, also known as cloth, affects how the balls roll, how fast the game is, and how long your table will last. When picking pool table felt, you should think about how often you play, the type of games you enjoy, and the environment where your table is located. Understanding the key features of pool table felt will help you make a choice that matches your needs and keeps your table in great shape.
MaterialPool table felt is usually made from a blend of wool and nylon, or sometimes just wool. The material affects how smooth the surface is and how long it will last. Wool-nylon blends are more durable and resist wear, making them good for tables that get a lot of use, like in family rooms or game halls. Pure wool felt is softer and can give a more traditional feel, but it may wear out faster. If you play often or want your table to last, a wool-nylon blend is a smart choice. If you play only occasionally and want a classic look, pure wool might be enough.
Weave TypeThere are two main types of weave: worsted and woolen. Worsted felt is tightly woven, smooth, and fast, which means balls roll quickly and predictably. This type is often used in professional settings and by serious players. Woolen felt is fuzzier and slower, which can be more forgiving for casual play and is often found on home tables. If you want a fast, professional-style game, go for worsted. If you prefer a slower pace or are just starting out, woolen felt is a good option.
Weight (oz/yard)The weight of the felt, usually measured in ounces per yard, tells you how thick and heavy the cloth is. Heavier felt (around 22-24 oz/yard) is more durable and can handle more play, while lighter felt (around 18-20 oz/yard) is less expensive but may wear out sooner. If your table will see a lot of use or you want it to last for years, choose a heavier felt. For occasional use, a lighter felt can be sufficient.
ColorPool table felt comes in many colors, with green and blue being the most common. The color you choose is mostly about personal preference and how it fits with your room. However, traditional green is easy on the eyes and reduces glare, while tournament blue is popular for visibility. If you want a classic look, go with green. If you want something modern or to match your decor, there are many other colors to choose from.
Stain ResistanceSome pool table felts are treated to resist stains and spills, which is helpful if your table is in a busy area or if food and drinks are nearby. Stain-resistant felt is easier to clean and stays looking new longer. If you expect spills or have kids, look for felt with stain resistance. If your table is in a low-traffic area, this may be less important.
